Eye Conditions

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that can result in vision loss or blindness from increased pressure in the eye. Risk factors include advancing age, a family history of glaucoma, a thin cornea, African-American heritage, past injuries to the eye, near-sightedness, and a history of severe anemia or shock. Since glaucoma has no symptoms, the best way to detect this disease is to have regular eye exams. Dr. Teed uses medication, laser, and other surgical procedures to control glaucoma.

Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a condition that often affects vision. Yearly eye examinations by an ophthalmologist are critical in order to monitor and treat potential vision problems. Diabetes may cause cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, which is damage to the blood vessels inside the eye. With modern advances in eye care, most diabetic eye disease is treatable if detected early, and vision loss can often be avoided.

Routine Eye Exams

Annual eye exams are recommended for people who are over 60, diabetic, take steroids, or have had a serious eye injury in the past. People under 40 should have an eye exam every three years; those 40 to 60 should be examined every two years. However, people in the 40 to 60 age group who have a family history of glaucoma should be examined every year. If it’s time for you to make an appointment, contact Dr. Teed today.
